Year 11 Resources
Medical Issues - Coursework
Pupils begin Year 11 with their coursework topic on the medical issues of infertility treatments, transplant surgery, genetics and which Christians and Muslims consider are ethical or not.
Pupils are assessed on two sections, (a) and (b). (a) is divided into three questions. (b) is not divided:
- (ai) Describe the treatments available to help infertile couples to have children (4 marks)
- (aii) Explain Christian attitudes, and the attitudes of ONE other religion, to these treatments (4 marks)
- (aiii) Explain why religious people may have problems with transplant surgery (4 marks)
- (b) "Only God has the right to interfere with our genes." Do you agree?
Give reasons for your opinion, showing you have considered another point of view. In your answer you should refer to religious teaching (8 marks).
Religion, Peace and Conflict
This unit examines personal conflicts, such as bullying and global conflicts in the world today. Pupils examine Christian ideas of pacifism (non-violence) and study Pax Christi – a religious organisation working for peace. This is contrasted to Christians who believe that war can be just and pupils examine St. Thomas Aquinas’s Just War theory. Pupils study different Muslim attitudes to war and evaluate reasons for these. Finally, pupils study two conflicts in the world today – Kashmir and Palestine/Israel and reasons for these conflicts.
Religion and the Environment
Pupils learn about pollution and the problem of non-renewable resources. They consider whether animals can have rights and why some people believe we can exploit animals and others don’t. For both of these areas pupils learn religious attitudes and reasons for these. They also study Christian Aid and the link between poverty and the environment. They examine the work that Christian Aid carries out to improve our environment and why they do this.
