Year 10 Resources
On each unit, pupils are assessed by practicing examination questions, formally and informally, in the classroom and in the examination centre for their mock exams.
Making Moral Decisions
Pupils begin Key Stage 4 GCSE Religious Studies with a unit that aims to allow them to know and understand how Christians and Muslims make moral decisions. They are not directly assessed on this unit in the exam, but all the other units draw from the information that the pupils gain here. They explore how people make moral decisions and then how Christians use the Bible, the Church, their conscience and Situation Ethics. They also examine how Muslims make moral decisions based on the Qur’an, the Shar’iah and the hadiths of Muhammad (pbuh).
Social Responsibility
This unit begins with a study of the United Kingdom, the government and the electoral system. A pupil is only required to know about Christianity within this unit and they evaluate the difference between Christians who believe that politics and religion should be separate and those who think they should be involved. A case study is carried out upon Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a Christian who tried to assassinate Hitler because he believed that “doing evil was less bad than being evil”. Pupils also examine the Welfare State and the Christian basis for it.
Crime and Punishment
This unit examines the connection between a sin and a crime and students learn that an action can be against the law, but not a sin and vice versa. They consider how laws are made and examine different theories of punishment. They discuss justice, forgiveness and punishment and what Christians and Muslims believe about these concepts.
