BTEC Diploma and Young Apprenticeship in Sport
The course provides the curriculum framework within which both practical and theoretical Physical Education is taught at Dorothy Stringer. The course is assessed via assignments and practical tasks that your child undertakes during PE lessons.
The qualification is delivered through six modules which are equivalent to four GCSEs. These are:
- The Body in Sport
- Health, Safety and Injury in Sport
- Work Based Project in Sport
- Planning and Leading Sports Activities
- Practical Outdoor and Adventurous Activities
- Expedition Experience Activities
In this unit pupils learn about the body and how it reacts in sporting situations. On completion of this unit pupils will:
- Understand how the skeleton works and how it is affected by exercise
- Understand how the muscular system works and how it is affected by exercise
- Understand how the cardiovascular system works and how it is affected by exercise
- Understand how the respiratory system works and how it is affected by exercise
- Know the fundamentals of the energy systems
On completion of this unit pupils will:
- Develop understanding and awareness of health and safety in sport and how precautions can be taken to ensure sport and exercise participants avoid injuries
In this unit the pupils learn about the world of work in a practical way. At the beginning of Year 10 they will prepare for a term and then go out on placement one afternoon a week for the rest of Year 10 and 11. Placements vary e.g. Leisure Centre, Golf Course, Primary School and Health Club and we work in partnership with BHTA Brighton and Hove Training Agency, who arrange our placements. In addition to doing BTEC work whilst on placement many of our pupils will obtain an NVQ in Sport and Recreation Level One (worth 4 Gcse’s). On completion of this units pupils will:
- Know about the range and scope of organisations and occupations within the sports industry
- Have used relevant documents and skills relating to sport-based work experience
- Have planned and carried out a project during sport-based work experience
- Give a work based power point presentation to their peers
On completion of this unit pupils will:
- Develop knowledge and skills to be able to plan and lead a range of practical activities. The Level 1 Sports Leader Award will also be achieved during this module.
In this unit pupils will work on improving their climbing and orienteering techniques and skills. On completion of this unit pupils will:
- Have improved their climbing and orienteering techniques and skills
- Have knowledge about the organisation and provision of outdoor and adventurous activities
- Know about the health and safety considerations associated with particular activities
- Know the environmental impacts associated with participation in outdoor and adventurous activities
Pupils are lucky enough to complete most of the work for this unit at our beautiful outdoor centre in the Snowdonia National Park, Dolawen. They are trained and tested before embarking on a week at Dolawen, when up their for a week their expedition skills and techniques will be put to the test in an area where the British Army train their soldiers. On completion of this unit pupils will:
- Understand the safety and environmental considerations for a multiday expedition
- Have used skills and techniques required for a multiday expedition
- Have used the equipment required for a multiday expedition
- Have planned, carried out and reviewed a multiday expedition
The BTEC is a non-examination course which we consider to be more relevant to the students and without the pressure of examinations. The BTEC points score (useful when applying for further education), is equivalent to four GCSEs A*-C. Each unit is given a grade: Pass = 6 points, Merit = 12 points and a Distinction = 18 points.The grades attainable for BTEC with the comparative GCSE grades are shown below:

After obtaining a BTEC Diploma in Sports a pupil can then:
- Go onto BTEC level 3 (part time with Brighton and Hove Albion or as part of a full time course at college) and then university
- Gain a place on a higher level apprenticeship in sports
- Gain a place on an apprenticeship in another area e.g. Carpentry, Hair Dressing
- Obtain a job
