Rewards and Discipline

Prior to joining the school, all students are issued with a copy of the school's agreed code of conduct and parents are expected to confirm in writing their agreement to the general principles. Any breach of the code is considered a serious matter.

Punishment or sanctions include extra written work, loss of privileges and after school detention. For minor offences students may be detained for up to 15 minutes, but for more serious offences an official detention of 30 and 60 minutes is imposed. In the latter case, parents are always given 24 hours notice. This will be issued via the student.

School (30 minutes) detentions are held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. Senior Staff Detentions (60 minutes) are held in F3 on Monday and Thursday.

No system of punishments can be effective without a corresponding system of rewards. There is a strong tradition and culture of rewarding children for both attainment and effort.

Rewards can consist of Commendation Slips, prizes and personal recognition by the Headteacher of work that staff consider to be of a particularly high standard.

Throughout their school life, students are given the chance to develop a sense of responsibility by acting as Form Captains or Form Representatives to the Year and School Councils and by joining the Junior Sports Leadership Award scheme. In the final year, those students who have proved their reliability become School Prefects under the leadership of the school's Head Girl and Head Boy.
