Math-magicians!
16 pupils here at Dorothy Stringer have achieved gold awards in the Intermediate UK Maths Challenge, a nationwide competition aimed at the top third of mathematicians in years 9 to 11.
Over 200,000 pupils nationwide took part in the competition and the gold awards put the pupils in the top 7% nationally. Eight of the pupils have also been invited to compete in further rounds, including Andrea Chlebikova (14) who has been invited to take part in the Intermediate Olympiad paper for Year 10s.
Andrea, who has already achieved an A* in Maths GCSE, qualified earlier in the year for the British Maths Olympiad, scoring just outside the top 100 candidates in the country under the age of 18. She hopes to win selection for the UK Maths team in future years.
In addition, out of approximately 140 pupils from Dorothy Stringer who entered the competition, 32 pupils gained silver awards and 47 bronze, meaning that over two thirds of the pupils gained awards.
The UK Maths Challenge is run by the UK Mathematics Trust. Over half a million pupils compete for on of three papers (Junior, Intermediate and Senior). The competitions are used as part of the selection procedure for the UK team for the International Mathematical Olympiad.
The United Kingdom Mathematics Trust was founded in 1996 as a registered charity to advance the education of children and young people in mathematics. The UKMT organises national mathematics competitions and other mathematical enrichment activities for 11-18 year old UK school pupils.
