Dorothy Stringer's Cameroon Celebration
Could you point to Cameroon on a map of Africa? Do you know what food and music Cameroon is famous for? Well, Dorothy Stringer High School would like to invite you to our first ‘Cameroon Evening’ to find out these answers and experience a taste of West Africa.
The event, taking place on Wednesday 26th March between 6.30-8.30pm, is an evening of celebration and awareness; celebrating Dorothy Stringer’s three-year partnership with Lyceé Classique de Kaélé, a secondary school in Cameroon. Dorothy Stringer established the partnership in January 2005 and since then has actively embedded Cameroon into the school curriculum; from writing and translating letters into French (Cameroon’s national language), learning about local Cameroonian culture, environment and developmental issues and virtual football competitions between the link schools.
Our link really came to life last June when Mr Moussa, the Assistant Head Teacher of the Cameroon school, visited Dorothy Stringer. It was a fantastic opportunity for pupils at Dorothy Stringer to meet Mr Moussa, and his passion and enthusiasm became infectious. This enthusiasm lives on today through both the weekly Cameroon Club, who have been very busy making jewellery and quizzes for the evening, and not forgetting the renowned Cameroon Café, who provide teachers with delicious fair trade cakes and refreshments every week.
Everybody is invited to the Cameroon Evening, from parents and pupils to local shops and businesses, so please come along to the event. As well as finding out information about the link, you can expect to hear talks from guest speakers, and take part in pupil run games and quizzes raising awareness of issues in Africa. There will also be a variety of musical and dance performances, as well as a guest musician playing traditional Cameroonian music. If you fancy an authentic bite to eat, there will also be some food tasting as well as the popular Cameroon Café.
We would like as many of the local community to celebrate with us, so come along to Dorothy Stringer on Wednesday 26th March (6.30-8.30pm) for a fun filled and informative evening.
