The EU

What is the European Union?

The European Union (EU) is a union of 25 independent countries founded on the 1st November 1993 to enhance political, economic and social cooperation. It was formerly known as the European Community (EC) or European Economic Community (ECC).

The EU has it's own anthem. In 1972, the Council of Europe decided to make Ludwig Van Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" theme it's anthem. Then, in 1985 it was officially adopted as the anthem of the European Union.

"Without words, in the universal language of music, this anthem expresses the ideals of freedom, peace and solidarity for which Europe stands....." Europa

The Flag

The European Union Flag is the symbol of the European Union and unity. The 12 gold stars do not reflect the number of member states. The number twelve is the symbol of perfection, completeness and unity. The flag remains unchanged regardless of the number of countries it represents. The current European flag was originally adopted by the Council of Europe on December 8th 1955.

Europe Day

On 9th May 1950, the French Foreign minister made a speech asking European countries to unite to prevent more wars in Europe. Very few people know that on that day, the first foundation stones of the European Union were laid. Today, the 9th May has become known as Europe Day.
