Stringer School Grounds

Dorothy Stringer has made a big committment over recent years to increase the biodiversity of the school grounds. Some of the work we have done includes the planting of native broad leaf trees and the modification of some of our existing grassland to make it ideal habitat for rare downland insects. We have also planted rare plants which are food sources for caterpillars and nectar sources for adult butterflies. David Bellamy visited us on Wednesday, 21st November 2007, to show his enthusiasm for our work and to encourage us, along with the other educational institutions here on the Surrenden Campus, to keep raising biodiversity and awareness.

The Pond

In October 2004 over 60 people helped with the construction of our school pond. We also researched possible sources of sustainable or otherwise environmentally friendly sources of timber for some pond-side furniture. In the end, we chose a simple design with curves to reflect the shape of the pond and the natural environment. The timber was sourced from the Recycled Wood Store in Brighton and our students made the table legs and stretchers that support the tops as part of their technology classes.
