Programmes of Study
The Programmes of Study (PoS) provide the basis for what we teach at each Key Stage, and are the starting point for preparing schemes of work. They state the mandatory requirements relating to pupils' knowledge, skills and understanding. The (PoS) prescribe the kind of activities through which pupils develop their Design and Technology capability and identify aspects of Design and Technology in which pupils make progress.
At all key stages pupils are involved in:
- developing, planning and communicating ideas;
- working with tools, equipment, materials and components to produce quality products;
- evaluating, processes, and products.
(DMAs), give pupils the chance to:
- developing, planning, and communicating ideas
- working with tools, equipment, materials and components to make quality products
- evaluating processes and products
- knowledge and understanding of materials and components.
In addition at KS3
- knowledge and understanding of structures
In addition at KS4
- knowledge and understanding of systems and control
Design and Technology teaching and learning is a creative process. It is interactive and involves pupils' intellectual and practical skills through practical activities including:
- investigating a need or design opportunity;
- developing design proposals, and modifying them in the light of evaluation;
- planning for implementation of design solution;
- making of the proposed solution;
- evaluating the effectiveness of the process they are engaged in and the product they have made.
At Dorothy Stringer we try to provide opportunities for pupils to engage in activities which are challenging, relevant and motivating, giving them enjoyment, satisfaction and a sense of purpose while extending their repertoire of knowledge, skills and understanding. The three types of activity through which pupils are given opportunities to develop their design and Technological capability are:
- investigate, disassembly and evaluative activities (IDEAs) related to familiar products and applications;
- focused practical tasks (FPTs), which can be used to practise skills;
- design and make assignments (DMAs), which involve the making of quality products.
