Theatre in Education Company

As part of Year 10 Work Experience, eight Year 10 pupilss form a Theatre in Education Company who work with Year 6 pupils of a local feeder school on a theatre performance.

The idea is that they work with the younger pupilss to find out their hopes, fears and expectations in connection with the transition between Junior and Secondary school. The project is called ‘Movin’ Up’! After a day with the Year 6’s, the Year 10 pupils spend four days devising a 20 minute piece of Theatre in Education which will dispel the rumours surrounding Secondary school and focus their attention on the positive aspects of the move.

It is a very valuable and exciting project and an important link between Stringer and the feeder school which, in the past have included St. Lukes, Elm Grove, Patcham and Downs Junior Schools.

What Will I Get Out of Extra-Curricular Drama?

Extra-curricular activities offer an essential opportunity for students to further their experience in creating, performing and responding to theatre, both in the school environment and in professional theatre venues.

Extra-curricular activities here at Dorothy Stringer cover a wide range of experiences from Drama Club through to whole school productions, live theatre visits and a Performing Arts Exchange to New York. Students are given the chance to be a part of creating and presenting a project to the wider school community, thus celebrating and demonstrating our own school culture.

Pupils are provided with opportunities to work with staff outside of the classroom environment. They benefit from their expertise and learn new and exciting skills in areas such as lighting, sound, set and costume design, music production, stage management, poster and ticket design, front of house, refreshments, direction and performing, refining negotiation, explanation and notation skills and offering splendid opportunities to learn new ways of using modern technology.

Live theatre visits expose students to a wide range of theatrical styles and genres and are an essential component of both KS3 and KS4 Drama. The performances seen at the theatre or brought to the school as a TIE performance will positively influence the work created by the students and develop their ability to respond to it.

All Drama clubs are inclusive and open to students of all ages and abilities, though separated into year groups for manageability.

Whole school productions, whilst inclusive in the range of abilities involved, will inevitably be selective due to the audition process. Auditions are open to all relevant year groups and we aim to make them a positive experience through positive feedback and praise of all students.

Gifted and able students will be offered, through the range of performances, visits and workshops, the opportunity to develop skills and experience work in the professional arena.
