Comenius EURO - The EURO Pupil
Project activities which have take place in the school year 2005/06
In accordance with the project submitted to and accepted by the national agencies, we have worked on the first main theme of the project i.e. “Intellectual aptitudes”, in relation to the three levels of the person (the body: the heart: the spirit).
Activities carried out to date are as follows:
- Analysis of the intra-muros situation in each school: comparison of problems, working methods and existing solutions.
- Drawing up of a self-evaluation questionnaire in order to understand the problems faced by pupils. Scrutiny and analysis of results.
- After having defined our target group and the techniques to be used, the establishment of steps to be taken in order to reach the 3 objectives identified for this working year: management of mixed ability classes; self-evaluation; respect for others. Work with groups of pupils with similar needs and setted groups; the introduction of different teaching methods for pupils with severe difficulties, particularly in MFL, with the aid of language assistants; work in tandem with pupils within the different partnership schools. Implementation of particular activities with pupils from difficult classes: small group work, a new activity each month. Work with the European Portfolio of Languages with classes participating in the project.
- Publication of a behaviour code.
- Bi-monthly email exchange and a global report at the end of each month.
- Drawing up with target pupils a set of ‘ten commandments’ relating to the issue of respect; a list of the problems encountered by the pupils and the solutions to be implemented with immediate effect. These ‘ten commandments’ will also enable the partner schools to compare the different education systems and the different teaching styles of teachers involved in the project.
- Initiation of an e-twinning activity in various subject areas (French, English, Italian, mother tongue), with the objective of improving the linguistic competence of pupils and increase their motivation to learn.
Activities are envisaged for the remaining part of the school year 2005/06
The measures listed above have been in place since the beginning of January and the first appraisal will be drawn up for the 7 April 2006.
- Introduction of a code of good behaviour and circulation throughout whole school (posters in different languages). Pupils work in partnership with pupils of different age groups (pastoral mentoring of year 7s by year 10s)
- Trailing of activities relating to the use of the European Portfolio of Languages with a view to making it more attractive and introducing more language games.
- Reflecting on the implications of the ‘Ten Commandments’ and the implementation of solutions proposed in them.
Mobility
- A first meeting took place in Perosa Argentina on the 5 and 6 October 2005 to start the project off. L’Institution St Joseph was not able to be present due to transport strikes in France, but was able to participate in the sessions via videoconferencing.
- A second meeting will take place in Le Havre during the week of the 9 May 2006 (Day of Europe) in order to appraise this year’s work and to begin the production of the final report. Our Romanian partners, hoping to renew their application to be part of the project in September 2006, will be present at those sessions.
- Regular bi-monthly email exchange between partners and a fuller progress report at the end of each month.
Project activities to be carried out in the course of the school year 2006/07
In accordance with the project submitted to and accepted by the national agencies, we shall work on the second main theme of the project, namely the problems of society in relation to the three levels of the person (the body: the heart: the spirit). The following modus operandi is proposed:
- Two periods of work
- Continuing sharing of ideas via email
- Final synthesis produced at annual meeting of partners
First period of work:
- Define the objectives to be achieved for this second main theme of the project.
How to inform pupils of the dangers of drug use (in terms of health, legality etc)?
How to prevent and stem violence? How to get pupils make a stand against violence?
How to integrate ethnic minorities (in France young people from Muslim backgrounds, in Italy from Albanian background and in the UK from Asian backgrounds)?
- Carry out an analysis in each school of the situation in relation to the themes under consideration: drugs, violence, integration of minorities, difficult family backgrounds.
- List action already taken in these areas and analysis of results.
- Research action taken elsewhere (other schools, community associations) with a view to possible solutions.
- Ongoing exchange of information between schools and decisions on action to be taken.
Second period of work:
- Implementing innovations decided on in first phase.
- Evaluating these measures.
Synthesis meeting of partners in Brighton in May 2007
- Assessment of measures taken on second main theme of project.
- Production of “good practice guide” built on the principles of the three levels of the person.
